I'm not Russian obviously but as an outsider (a Sri Lankan no less..how much further from Russia can you get!), when I think of "Mother Russia", I think of Volodina and Zeliaeva. To me those two are the two contrasting faces of Russian beauty. Volodina on the one hand has that unique central asian look about her. Valentina is more in the western mold of beauty. What do you reckon Max?

By golly I'm a fan of your country! I'm not sure how bright she is but Valentina should be sent into the Russian space program. This referrence to the space program is my way of saying that Russian women are not just good to look at but inherently smarter and more hardcore than their western counterparts. What can I say, I'm still cut about the whole cold war debacle!

Volodina clearly has a strain of Asian (most probably Tatar) blood in her veins, thus her look, which you described as central asian. Zeliaeva has a more typical Slavic appearance, but if you ask me here features seem more Western-Slavic (e.g. Czech/Polish) than Eastern-Slavic (e.g. Russian/Ukranian).

I'm certainly flattered by the high esteem given by you to the women of my Motherland :) As far as sending Valentina to the space program is concerned, the Soviet program already had a Valentina some twenty years before Ms. Zeliaeva was born -- the first woman ever to travel into the outer space in 1963 was Valentina Tereshkova.

If you don't mind me asking -- do you remember the Cold War days yourself?

And yet once again I want to encourage you to sign-up for an LJ account!

Who could forget Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova! Yes, this is one of many reasons why I admire the communist period. The first humans in space carried the hammer and sickle! Let the world marvel! I personally feel this revolutionary dream was sabotaged by some very ordinary men and the sheer ignorance of the age. Some years back I had the pleasure of meeting a beautiful Russian chemical engineering prof (female) at my uni. For all the talk of the western liberated woman the capitalist countries still can't match the communist track record of gender equality. Many of the female staff at Sydney University's mineral and geological studies department are from the former Soviet bloc. Max if you happen to find old Soviet propaganda posters displaying women in factory overalls (stoic glances, flattened tits etc..) please post them! Liberation begins when the high heels come off and the boots go on! But enough of my ranting,..

I have nothing but incredible admiration for Russia. I just hope this sleeping giant reawakens in the near future. As for a LJ account, what would I write about?

I'll see what I can do.

You of all the people strike me as a person who has something to say. If nothing else, having an account will make commenting more convenient.

I was born in 82. I remember overhearing conversations around this period (85-87) when a lot of people though Regan would start WWIII with the Soviet Union. I was very young but I clearly remember the tension of that time.
