[ ... ] Verizon will slash about 7% of its Media Group amid missed revenue goals, reports The Wall Street Journal, amounting to roughly 800 staffers. (Globally, Verizon Media Group comprises some 11,385 employees).

The Media Group, headed up by former Alibaba exec Guru Gowrappan, comprises Yahoo, Tumblr, AOL, HuffPost, TechCrunch, Engadget, and more. The cuts are occurring after a monthlong internal review, according to the Journal, and Gowrappan told staffers in a memo that, going forward, the Group would narrow its focus on mobile and video-based products — with a stated emphasis on its Yahoo-branded entertainment and news platform.

Tumblr will start blocking adult content on December 17th
[ Mallory Locklear | December 3, 2018 | via Engadget ]

Tumblr has announced that it will no longer allow adult content beginning December 17th. The site, which is owned by Engadget's parent company, says that content includes "photos, videos or GIFs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples and any content -- including photos, videos, GIFs and illustrations -- that depicts sex acts." The move comes just after Tumblr's app was removed from the App Store, reportedly because of images of child sexual abuse that made their way onto the site.

In a statement, Tumblr said at the time that while it scans every uploaded image against a database of known child sexual abuse material, images that hadn't yet been included in the database were found on its site. It removed the content and reiterated that it had a "zero tolerance policy" against that type of material. But during that same time, Tumblr was also reportedly removing other posts featuring adult content, which some people believed to be a response to the App Store removal.

"As Tumblr continues to grow and evolve, and our understanding of our impact on our world becomes clearer, we have a responsibility to consider that impact across different age groups, demographics, cultures and mindsets," the company said in a statement about its decision to ban adult content. "We spent considerable time weighing the pros and cons of expression in the community that includes adult content. In doing so, it became clear that without this content we have the opportunity to create a place where more people feel comfortable expressing themselves."

Some content will still be allowed under the new rules, including breasts in the context of breastfeeding, birth and health-related situations, as well as erotica, nudity related to a newsworthy event and nudity in art. Those whose posts have been flagged as having adult content will be notified, and they'll be able to appeal Tumblr's decision. Adult content posts will be reverted to a private setting.

"We're relying on automated tools to identify adult content and humans to help train and keep our systems in check," said Tumblr. "We know there will be mistakes, but we've done our best to create and enforce a policy that acknowledges the breadth of expression we see in the community." The company added that it plans to be "as transparent as possible" with its users regarding any decisions it makes going forward.

In 2016, Indonesia banned Tumblr for hosting pornographic content, and last year the company introduced a safe mode that allows users to hide sensitive material from view.

Marissa Mayer is doing a huge shakeup at Yahoo and Tumblr will never be the same
[ MATT ROSOFF AND MATT JOHNSTON | APR. 7, 2015 | via Business Insider ]

Yahoo is planning a big reorganization that will bring Tumblr more closely into the company, instead of allowing it to be run as a largely independent business unit.

The Information reports that CEO Marissa Mayer discussed the reorg last week at an offsite meeting for execs.

She has asked former Tumblr CEO David Karp which senior vice president within the company he would like to report to.

Mayer spent more than $1 billion on Tumblr in May 2013, but the division is unlikely to meet her stated goal of $100 million in revenue this year, according to The Information's report.

Tumblr might be brought under Simon Khalaf, who was the CEO of Flurry, a mobile analytics startup that Yahoo bought last year. He is reportedly being promoted to senior VP.

Also, mobile products leader Adam Cahan could take over video from Michael Kerns, who is reportedly considering taking a leave of absence. Cahan is a controversial figure at the company, according to reporting by Business Insider's Nicholas Carlson for his book on Yahoo, who says that some at the company consider him "difficult to get along with" and "quick to take credit for the work of others."

Autonomous until now

Yahoo bought Tumblr in May 2013 for $1.1 billion. It was seen by many as Marissa Mayer's first big move at the helm of Yahoo.

Back then, Tumblr had just $13 million in revenue.

People who use Tumblr follow other Tumblrs through a "Dashboard." This works like Twitter or Facebook with other Tumblr blog posts flowing through a timeline. One would think that as Tumblr moves closer to Yahoo in this reorganization, ad revenue through Tumblr could become more of a priority.

Back in 2013 when Tumblr was acquired, Tumblr had raised $125 million in funding. The final round of funding reportedly valued the company at $800 million. It was looking for more funding when Yahoo stepped in and took it over.

However, to this point, Tumblr has operated relatively autonomous from the Yahoo mothership. Tumblr users haven't experienced a ton of change between Yahoo's purchase and now, but this new move hints at change.

Time will tell how the dynamic will play out within Yahoo as Tumblr draws closer.

[...] Mayer devised a strategy to buy up hot startups (she outbid Facebook for Tumblr)
Я, если что, ни разу не фанат Yahoo!, но огромное им человеческое спасибо, что перебили фейсбучек и не дали им прибрать к рукам Tumblr -- иначе, чует моё сердце, наверняка бы пропал калабуховский дом.
